Addison Marshall — HYPERCLAY
Wednesday November 16 2011
Welcome to installment six in the HYPERCLAY: Contemporary Ceramics artist profile series. Every week we have been profiling one of the eight artists involved in HYPERCLAY — you can catch up on the series here.
This week: Addison Marshall.
You may remember Marshall from his profile in Object magazine Issue 60, with a focus on International Ceramics. If you don’t have an iPad and can’t download the issue, you can watch the video, narrated by Marshall, here or download it through iTunes U.
Marshall spent twelve years working in the fashion industry before a short course ten years ago reignited a latent passion stewing since a night course he enrolled in when he was eight or nine — joining a class where he was the only kid in a room full of adults. Now, he has been practicing ceramics for five years, drawing inspiration from the universe and the unknown — reflected generally in his work, and quite literally here.
Marshall’s work in HYPERCLAY, Satellite Series, 2010/11, is about symmetry and repetition of components. Like most of his pieces, the works began as a vision in his head that he then tries to make out of ceramics and, in this case, household objects to function structurally around the hand-worked disc-like ceramic pieces — objects like wooden skewers, cotton thread and rubber bands. In the words of artist and Postgraduate Coordinator at the National Art School in Sydney, Dr John Di Stefano, Marshall’s work is ‘Intimate and can be experienced from different perspectives… [they are] both recognisable and new.’ Marshall himself views the difference in his work coming from his background in fashion and the understanding of colour that brings him — not to mention the time he spent trend forecasting.
Marshall’s striking and dynamic works are touring to all venues over the next couple of years. For a full list of dates and venues, and for more information on HYPERCLAY, click here.
