An agile and innovative organisation, Object takes a maverick's approach to the definition of design and believes that creative innovation occurs most successfully in the grey spaces, through exploring the unexplored and pursuing the hybrid.
Object nurtures bold ambitions, constantly seeking ways to reinterpret design for our audiences and the community. Through visionary exhibitions, education programs, publications and retail activities, we strive to make connections between creative minds right across the country, heighten awareness of outstanding design, and of course, play host to the best of Australian craft and design.
Object's influence extends beyond Sydney with nationally distributed publications and touring exhibitions travelling to more than 15 regional and metropolitan venues around Australia every year. Through its programs, Object provides a lively and accessible connection between people and the dynamic world of design and creativity.

Object: Australian Centre for Craft and Design is supported by the New South Wales Government - Arts NSW, and the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. Object also receives support through the Visual Arts and Craft strategy, an initiative of the Australia, State and Territory Governments.
 
Object exhibitions, educational activities, publications and operations are also funded through contributions from foundations, corporations and individuals, and through commercial activities.

Secrets + Stories

11 - 26 September 2010

 
Sectrets + Stories is the result of a unique collaboration between Object, designer Michael Alvisse and students, staff and parents from Dulwich High School of Art and Design.

 
After recent trips to Bali where family and community are clear priorities, Alvisse was inspired to share his experiences. With this in mind the students were encouraged to explore their own lives, uncovering secrets and stories drawn from the shared memories of their families.

 
Over many months Alvisse guided the students through the design process, showing them how to develop a concept and see it through to realisation.

 
During the process of producing this immersive installation special relationships developed between all those involved and a real sense of community has been established.

Robert Baines: Metal

Robert Baines is one of Australia's most influential and prominent jewellers. His exceptional craft skills and extraordinary body of work are being honoured at Object Gallery as the sixth 'Living Treasure' in the Living Treasures: Master of Australian Craft Series.

Stereotyped

Stereotyped: sound & typography is an exhibition that will look at how type and sound create meaning in our everyday lives simultaneously challenging the definition of the designer in the 21st Century.

 
Curated by Joan-Maree Hargreaves, Object's Producer - Digital & Publications, Stereotyped will cross multiple disciplines, from sound designers/composers/musicians to typographers/illustrators/graphic designers/animators/filmmakers/writers, to challenge commonly held beliefs about each discipline and create an unforgettable sensory experience.

Lee Mathers & Janet Laurence

23 October 2010 - 16 January 2011

Lee Mathers was an outstanding graduate in glass from Sydney College of the Arts in 2007. After exhibiting in Object's annual national graduate exhibition Design Now! in 2008 Mathers was awarded an Australia Council funded mentorship to work with the acclaimed Sydney artist Janet Laurence.

This exhibition will present outcomes of that mentorship featuring work by both artists that represent the dialogue that was developed during and since the mentorship.

CULTIVATE
Object's Primary School Education Program, Cultivate, is specifically designed for young students to learn and appreciate design, craft and the built environment.

As a small venue Object Gallery is a fantastic place to introduce young children to experiencing an exhibition.

Object provides talks and craft/art workshops that will enhance current units of work undertaken at schools.
